When I was born in 2000, I was assigned male at birth. However, I’ve never seen myself as anyone other than a woman. I realized that I had gender dysphoria when I was 12 years old, but I kept my real identity a secret due to fears of discrimination. Because of my untreated gender dysphoria, I felt depressed and devoid of a personality that could’ve led me to a productive childhood.
I finally came out in 2021 and sought gender-affirming care to treat my gender dysphoria. I’ve received hormone replacement therapy, facial hair removal, and feminizing vocal therapy, leading me to become far more happier than I could ever have been. I’m confident in receiving further gender-affirming care thanks to my health insurance covering 70% of the cost for the operation.
Because of this, I emphasize that gender-affirming care is medically necessary and must be covered by all health insurance providers so that transgender people like me can afford to receive the care that we need.
